Traumatic brain injuries impact every aspect of life

People who suffer from a traumatic brain injury will experience a lot of life impacts. These can range from things that are bothersome, such as changes in the ability to taste, to things that are very serious, such as having uncontrolled tremors.

These impacts don’t affect everyone who has a traumatic brain injury. The location and severity of the injury play a role in what a victim will have to deal with.

Three categories of effects

The effects of a traumatic brain injury will fall into one of three categories. These include:

  • Cognitive: These effects have to do with changes in the person’s ability to think, focus, remember and communicate.
  • Physical: These involve the ability to move or feel pain. Bowel and bladder control issues, fatigue, headaches, sensory changes, spasticity and paralysis are some examples of things that fall into this category.
  • Behavioral: These effects have to do with emotions and behaviors, such as having mood swings, being impulsive, becoming depressed and experiencing irritability.

Traumatic brain injury victims may need assistance with handling some aspects of life. Going through therapy may help them to regain some abilities. They may also learn how to live without those abilities by being taught new ways of doing things.

Treatments for a traumatic brain injury can become expensive. When the person suffered the injury due to the negligence of another person, they may choose to seek compensation for the financial impacts. This is done through a personal injury lawsuit that can seek damages for missed wages, medical care costs and similar expenses related to the injury.
